About Quinn Austin-Small, PhD
Welcome! My name is Dr. Quinn Austin-Small. I am a NY Psychologist with twenty years of experience in the mental health field. I’ve worked in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York in a variety of settings. I specialize in trauma-spectrum disorders, personality issues, and psychosis. I work extensively with Veterans. I have had extensive post-graduate training in pharmacology and different forms of psychotherapy. I hold a Diplomate from the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, amongst others. In the initial session, we focus on building a relationship. I also try to understand what is bringing you to therapy, and a bit about your background and life experiences. I strongly believe that the person is never the problem, the problem is the problem. In my experience, when a person feels “crazy,” they are usually describing feeling alienated, frustrated, and alone.

What is a typical session like with me? We may use narrative techniques to help you “write a new story” of your life- one where you are empowered and connected. We may use cognitive-behavioral techniques to examine how old thought patterns are keeping you stuck, and how they can be changed. We may use Buddhist psychotherapy techniques, learning to be aware of what is happening, and how to manage difficult emotions. Relationships can be reviewed using psychodynamic principles. In short- there is no single way to approach difficulties. You are a complex, dynamic person in a complex context.
