About
Following graduation from medical school at the University of Navarra, Spain (1970) I immigrated to the USA. My internship was a rigorous one at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago following which I completed a residency training in Psychiatry at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute then the leading research center operated by the state government and which Is now run by the University of Illinois. I entered private practice starting my own office in Chicago and also held a number of salaried positions for various hospitals and obtained attending privileges in them as well and faculty positions at the local medical schools. My clinical experience was extensive working with complex patient populations that included the intellectually disabled, children and adolescents, adults with varying degrees of illness severity. I worked in the back wards of state hospitals, prisons, county jails, local community hospitals and community mental health centers in addition to my own high street practice. I performed procedures such as Electroconvulsive Therapy and Amytal Interviews. I also relished the opportunity to teach medical students and residents. I entered the forensic field by taking on a position at the Psychiatric Institute of the Cook County Circuit Court of Cook County working part time evaluating and testifying on those individuals charged with felonies who were alleged to be mentally ill. The court was interested in knowing whether they were fit to stand trial and if so if they were capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. I also conducted custody evaluations in order to assist the court determine what would be in the best interests of the children affected by their parents’ dispute. After several years I extended this work to my private practice which I had then relocated to Dixon Illinois and Dubuque Iowa. After 35 years of private practice I took a position with the Veterans Health Administration in St Augustine Florida where I Spent the next 10 years until 2019 when I went back into private practice. While at the VA I did work in my spare time at various hospitals around the country keeping up my skills in child and adolescent and adult in patient work as well as providing office-based consultations to the same population. My experience at the VA was notable for my work in telemedicine which was beginning to acquire popularity and in starting the Suboxone Clinic for veterans with opioid addictions. In the course of my clinical work I was able to obtain certification in General Psychiatry (1976), Forensic Psychiatry (1996), Addiction Medicine (2019) and qualification as a Medical Review Officer (2019). Outside of the field of Medicine I obtained a degree in Law (LL.M 2004) and Diplomacy (MA 2011). Although I have been practicing Medicine for the last 50 years it is my hope and intention to continue to do useful and beneficial work which is why I have opted for Tele Medicine as this mode of engagement with patients can be done without the travails of commuting in inclement weather and other egregious conditions for all parties while at the same time providing high standards of care. It will also extend my shelf life. Outside of Medicine I was active in the political arena mainly lobbying for the rights of immigrants particularly those in the health care field. When not engaged at work I enjoyed hiking and jogging and was able to complete the Chicago marathon as well scale Kilimanjaro and Kala Pattar both over 19,000 feet high.
