Thank you for reviewing my profile.
I see my patients first as a human and as a whole. I create a very friendly and non-judgmental environment where patients feel very comfortable. I provide mainly talk therapy along with medication management as needed. I believe that psychiatric medications are necessary if a patient is not able to function in her/his daily life. Otherwise, I view medications as band-aids. I like to get to the core of their problems and solve them as much as possible without the need of a medication.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is the core of my practice because it works very quickly and it is very effective. I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamics Therapy and Meaning Centered Therapy.
If you have chronic medical problems that do not respond to usual medical treatments such as:
- Chronic back pain, other chronic bodily pains
- Refractory migraines
- Pseudo-seizures
- Fibromyalgia
- Non-remitting nausea/vomiting/dyspepsia
- Cyclic vomiting syndrome
- Phantom limb pain
- Other somatic symptom disorders and conversion disorders.
Also if you have diseases that get worse with stress such as:
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Psoriasis
- Asthma
- COAH
- Other rheumatological disorders.
Then you have found the right psychiatrist. I can help you set free from your physical complaints.
I have a keen interest in treating Adult ADHD. I also like treating depression, anxiety and PTSD. I do not treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or addiction disorders. Exceptions can apply for mild cases.
I am board certified in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine (Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry).
I did my residency at Maimonides Medical Center and fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center/Weill Cornell NYP. I had worked as an attending at Westchester Medical Center until recently and am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College.
Most of my patients tell me I look very young when they first meet me with a bit of hesitation about me being an experienced-enough psychiatrist. However they don't want to leave my practice after the expertise, compassion and caring they witness.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about me or my practice.
Looking forward to working with you.
Warm regards,
Dr. Hande Okan
