He was born June 27, 1959, Brooklyn, New York. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1981 and graduated from SUNY-Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, New York in 1985.
Dr. Turtel did his surgical internship at SUNY-Upstate from 1985 to 1986 and his orthopedic residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, New York from 1987 to 1991. He was a Neurosurgery Spine Fellow at LIJMC from 1986 to 1987 and Sports Medicine Fellow at New York University Medical Center, New York, NY from 1991-1992. He became board certified in 1994.
Dr. Turtel is certified by the Fellow American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
He has membership in several medical and scientific societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopaedic Society, American College of Sports Medicine, the International Cartilage Repair Society the American Medical Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, New York County Medical Society, and the Greater Metropolitan Sports Society.
His hospital appointments are as follows: Hospital for Joint Diseases, Orthopaedic Institute, Adjunct, since 1992; Beth Israel Medical Center, Associate Attending, since 1993; and Lenox Hill Hospital, Attending, since 1994.
In addition to the above noted professional sports affiliations he has been Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Charge Officer for Doping Control, Men’s World Cup Soccer, 1994; team physician FIFA All-Stars, Giant Stadium, All-Stars Game in July 1996 and assistant medical coordinator for the Women’s World Cup in 1998.
Dr. Turtel’s publications include many articles, chapters and a textbook pertaining to sports medicine and joint replacement. He has been Course Instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America and has given numerous presentations to orthopedic societies.
He was recently featured in a live NBC news broadcast of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery on one of the network anchors. Dr. Turtel currently is in practice in Manhattan where he has an elite practice including personalities such as Michelle Kwan.
